It would be nearly impossible to overestimate the vast influence and legacy of jazz legend John Coltrane, who would have marked his 100th birthday on Sept. 23, 2026. The North Carolina native fundamentally revolutionized the saxophone, pushing musical boundaries and developing wildly innovative techniques. This weekend, fans can check out Coltrane 100: Legacy, featuring soloist Joe Lovano and the Nashville Symphony. Arranged and curated by acclaimed composer Carlos Simon, this new concert experience reimagines some of Coltrane’s most beloved works with fresh arrangements and rich orchestrations. Rising conductor Jonathan Taylor Rush will lead the orchestra, and Lovano (a Grammy-winning saxophonist who, like Coltrane, is known for his fearless spirit and innovative style) will be on hand to present modern interpretations of Coltrane classics, along with a few new compositions that showcase the artist’s profound impact. The audience can also look forward to seeing a collection of personal photos from Coltrane’s all too brief but illustrious life and career.
