Next to using your voice, one of the most powerful things you can do is show somebody how they can use theirs. Local nonprofit Girls Write Nashville has been engaged in this important work for almost a decade. GWN now offers programs during or after school through several MNPS middle schools, as well as a citywide program that pairs teens with pro songwriters for one-on-one mentoring sessions that help them refine an idea for a song until it (ahem) sings. Enrollment is free, and the nonprofit depends on donations and fundraising campaigns like their annual benefit show, happening this weekend as part of Lightning 100’s Nashville Sunday Night at 3rd and Lindsley. Shakiah is your youth artist co-host, and the gig begins with a writers’ round featuring longtime GWN participants who are high school seniors: Thalia Dills, Koley Berry, Nevaeh and Anya. Pop songsmith Ashe headlines the show. She showcased her aptitude for incisive examination — indeed, sometimes sharp and bloody as a surgeon’s scalpel — of romantic relationships on her 2024 LP Willson, which coincided with her move to Nashville. Last year, Ashe followed that up with The Dream by The Favors, a duo record on which she has teamed up with FINNEAS, aka Billie Eilish’s brother and longtime production partner.
