The latest offering from Nashville Sites — an organization that offers free self-guided tours created and curated by local experts — is a 12-stop jaunt around Centennial Park that highlights the 132-acre space’s most notable spots as well as some of its hidden history. Everyone knows the tour’s starting location, our replica Parthenon, but the trek delves into some lesser-known facts of the area. One location on the tour is the former public swimming pool complex behind the Centennial Arts Center. Nashville Scene Podcast co-host and Nashville Sites cultural ambassador Jerome Moore narrates this section of the audio tour, which relays the story of activists Kwame Lillard and Matthew Walker Jr. — two college students who, in 1961, staged a “swim-in” to challenge Nashville’s segregated swimming pools. As the park continues its $10 million expansion, Nashville Sites is doing the necessary work to preserve the land’s history.
