Critic's Pick: Beyond the Counter Kickoff

When three of the city’s most prominent historians are in the same room, it’s pretty much mandatory to join them. In Beyond the Counter: Conversations on Civil Rights, Culture & Community, Elliott Robinson of the Civil Rights Room at the Nashville Public Library will moderate a conversation with Tennessee State University African American public history scholar Dr. Learotha Williams (recently named Davidson County’s official historian) and Dr. Taure Brown, director of the James Lawson Institute for the Research and Study of Nonviolent Movements at Vanderbilt University Divinity School. The trio is set to discuss the lunch counter sit-ins that took place at Woolworth’s — the very building where the discussion is set to take place — as well as the Nashville peaceful protest movement. For further education, check out the rest of the free events planned for the space in conjunction with the Nashville Public Library Civil Rights Room (including others focused on student leaders, gospel and protest music). And while you’re at it, check out the glorious Civil Rights Room in the main library itself.
