Nashville’s arthouse cinema, the Belcourt Theatre, is confronting Hollywood’s gender disparities by empowering teenage girls with the tools to identify the problem. Created by the Belcourt’s education and engagement director, Allison Inman, and artist Daisy Stackpole, Strong Leads met four times in the spring to watch films directed by women and featuring women as protagonists. After each screening, Inman led the group in breaking down how the films worked and what they mean in an industry that disproportionately favors men. In the midst of the #MeToo movement, the seminar created a space for a healthy mix of questions, affirmations and righteous feminist anger. ERICA CICCARONE
