The Sandlot has played on a loop so consistently in our house that it’s become a part of my family’s DNA. Released in 1993 and set in the early 1960s in the San Fernando Valley, it follows Scotty Smalls, a new kid in town who desperately wants to fit in with a group of baseball-obsessed boys. The quintessential summer movie coasts on vibes and uses a similar voiceover narration as A Christmas Story and Stand by Me to make millennials nostalgic for a time they didn’t even experience. The Sandlot has so much heart and is endlessly quotable (“You’re killing me, Smalls!”), which has given the film its long-tail effect. And although it has been a tremendous season for movies, a family of four can’t set foot in a theater without dropping at least $80. Thankfully, Regal theaters are selling $1 tickets to screenings of The Sandlot on Thursday, so your crew can continue to love it FOR-EV-ER.
