Every week in Nashville, someone could sell you a show by declaring that “you need to see this artist in a small room while you can!” Well folks, it’s my turn this week. Country troubadour Kashus Culpepper plays The Basement East on Thursday night, and the show could easily be remembered as that time he played a headlining gig in town before moving on to much bigger rooms. Culpepper plays the East Nashville club in support of Act I, an 18-song debut LP that features roof-raising soul songs (like the repeat-worthy “Man of His Word”), indie-folk ruminations (such as “Break Me Like”) and tried-and-true country storytelling (“House on a Hill”). Collaborators on the album include two go-to voices in Americana — Marcus King on the rowdy rock number “Southern Man,” and Sierra Ferrell on the soft-to-the-touch song “Broken Wing Bird.” Support on the show comes from Aubory Bugg and Jaid Joice.
