In Our Place

One of my favorite side effects of the Frist’s massive undertaking In Her Place: Nashville Artists in the Twenty-First Century is how quickly its institutional support has begun to ripple outward. One example is David Lusk Gallery, which hosted Painting and Her Women, a group show curated by Jodi Hays, an artist whose work features prominently in In Her Place, and whose curation put a feminist framework around the artmaking. At Tinney Contemporary, TINNEY/20 highlighted the gallery’s long history of exhibiting Nashville-based artists. If you measure an exhibition’s success by how it drives the cultural conversation, In Her Place is clearly a worthy endeavor, and it’s not even halfway through its run. Red Arrow’s In Our Place is perhaps the most direct extension of the Frist show. Artists Alex Blau, Briena Harmening, Emily Weiner, Jodi Hays, Kimia Ferdowsi Kline, Lauren Gregory and Vadis Turner are among the 28 artists showing at the Frist who have also exhibited at Red Arrow during the gallery’s 12 years in Nashville. This is a great way to show that museum recognition matters to the community, and for collectors, it’s an ideal opportunity to support artists whose visibility is being bolstered.

Through April 18 at Red Arrow
