Singer-songwriter-guitarist Grant-Lee Phillips makes a stop at The 5 Spot Thursday night for a solo acoustic show in support of his impressive 12th album In the Hour of Dust, which was released in September. Phillips, who played the town troubadour in the TV series Gilmore Girls, led the alternative rock band Grant Lee Buffalo in the 1990s before embarking on a solo career in 2000. In the Hour of Dust takes its name from a common theme in the poetry and art of India — the concept of “the hour of the cow dust,” which is the time of day when the cows are led back home. It’s a deep, contemplative record that searches for meaning amid “the blinding dust of unreality.” Phillips, who has called Nashville home since 2013, is looking forward to Thursday’s show. “The 5 Spot is one of those places where I instantly felt at home,” he tells the Scene. “Great sound, great sight lines and a friendly neighborhood atmosphere. … I popped in with my friend Josh Rouse at his recent residency and knew I had to get back here to play.” Grammy-winning songwriter Daniel Tashian will open the show.
6 p.m. at The 5 Spot
1006 Forest Ave.
