Deadly Prey Gallery’s hand-painted bootleg movie posters have a fascinating origin story, emerging as promotional materials made by local artists for Ghana’s 1980s rural pop-up “mobile cinemas.” They’re true DIY, a response to adverse conditions and life under a military dictatorship with audacious, eye-catching creativity. Today Deadly Prey preserves them, and works with artists continuing the tradition in Accra on commissions for contemporary films and TV. Case in point: Last Week Tonight With John Oliver commissioned a custom poster this year for Emmy voting season — and it depicts Oliver wielding two guns and drinking wine with a horse, surrounded by blood and explosions. For two days this month, Deadly Prey will host a pop-up at Cë Gallery, offering exhibition tours and a print sale.
