It was a little more than three years ago when acclaimed multimedia artist Jeffrey Gibson presented his solo exhibition The Body Electric at the Frist. That show was a well-timed introduction of his work to Nashville audiences — the following year, Gibson represented the U.S. at the Venice Biennale, where he was the first Indigenous artist to have a solo exhibition in the American pavilion. We’re glad to have him back in Nashville at the Frist, this time as an exhibition curator. Along with his co-curator Jenelle Porter, Gibson is presenting the work of 15 artists whose work spans 100 years of Indigenous art. The late, great Cree artist Kimowan Metchewais is quoted in the exhibition text: “Notice how the past shapes the present and ask to what end. Resist obvious descriptions and repeated reasoning.” Although the exhibit opens on Friday, the two curators will be in conversation on Thursday to discuss their selection. Come early — at 5:15 p.m., a performance by Indigenous flutist Justin Mihtukwsun will take place in the Frist’s main lobby.
Opening reception 6:30 p.m. June 25; through Sept. 27 at the Frist
919 Broadway
