Best Media Legacy in Nashville in 2026: Rosetta Miller-Perry
Dubbed the “Queen Mother of the Black Press,” Rosetta Miller-Perry gave voice to Tennessee’s African American community through the Tennessee Tribune, which she founded with her husband in 1991. Distributed in every urban center of Tennessee with the slogan “Black press is the hope for the future,” the Tribune had a goal of illuminating social issues and individual achievements overlooked by the mainstream media. A naval veteran and civil rights activist, Miller-Perry also founded the Greater Nashville Black Chamber of Commerce. The Tribune will continue her legacy of community journalism following her passing in June at age 91.
