When Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson were expelled from office by the Republican-controlled state House earlier this year, it felt like democracy was no longer functioning. The Democratic representatives from Nashville and Memphis, respectively, wouldn’t be heard, and the Republican supermajority loomed over those who were seeking to give voice to a grieving community and pursue gun control solutions. But the representatives’ districts sent the two back to the Capitol with quick unanimous votes. Jones and Pearson returned with one goal top of mind: to fight like hell for those who couldn’t fight for themselves. They carried those convictions through the remainder of the legislative session, and into August’s special session.
