The titular song from Kacey Musgraves’ forthcoming LP Deeper Well is about finding and focusing on the still, small voices inside yourself and learning to trust their guidance. It can be a lengthy and challenging process, and as she sings, it involves tuning out people and habits that are making it harder, as well as recognizing the limits of what she’s been taught. During her return visit as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live, her performances directly reflected that philosophy.
Both “Deeper Well” and “Too Good to Be True” are quiet songs, not something you usually expect to see on national television. Musgraves sang both gently amid a chorus of three fingerstyle acoustic guitars, supported by bass, drums and two keyboardists. On “Deeper,” she sang only, and on “Too Good,” a song about going into a new romantic relationship with open eyes as well as an open heart, she played the third acoustic while one of her bandmates sat down at the pedal steel. It’s a lot of instruments onstage kept in very subtle balance — not something you see on TV all that often, either.
