Sometimes it feels good to be in the presence of a fully confident dirtbag. The kind who functions through a perpetual beer o’clock, loping around in a pair of worn-in denim that’s the right level of distressed — kinda agitated, but not freaking out, man. The Growlers’ frontman, Brooks Nielsen, fits the bill. He’s far from perfect, yet perfectly at home in his body. Nielsen started The Growlers out of California in the Aughts, blending garage and psych rock to create “beach goth,” a genre that makes no sense if you sit with it for too long. It’s just so immediately itself. Certainly the sign of a dude with a vision. This tour marks The Growlers’ 20th anniversary and return after a six-year hiatus. Their sets are known for going over two hours, an impressive feat of endurance — unfussy, unpolished, unencumbered by gravity — with Nielsen’s gnomic lyrics rattling through a few inches of smoker’s cough phlegm. Bewildering and, yes, charming.
