Nashville is full of surprises. One of them is Monthaven, the stellar nonprofit art and culture museum just beyond Davidson County in Hendersonville. Another is discovering the visual art practices of some of the city’s most celebrated musical icons. Steve Wariner is an accomplished, award-winning songwriter and guitarist, and he’s also the subject of a solo retrospective exhibition at Monthaven that opened on June 21. The show’s title — The Flip Side — hints at this underexplored parallel creative track, but Wariner has actually been outspoken about his life as a visual artist, and has contributed work to exhibitions at the Tennessee State Museum, among others. This show includes 60 works made over the past 30 years — a monumental undertaking for any artist.
