Before We Had Names is a new group show of Black creators curated by local artist Marteja Bailey. The show’s theme comes from an Ubuntu saying, “I am because we are,” and the artists each explore identity as something shaped not only by the individual, but through memory, ancestry, and all the histories we carry with us. Woodcuts Gallery will also be hosting an artist talk on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. as part of the North Nashville Arts Coalition’s 10th anniversary celebration and the North Nashville Culture Crawl. Before We Had Names features work by Dough Joe, Elisheba Mrozik, Lorenzo Swinton, Phishbone and more.
