Something tells me Mike Myers is itching to bring the Austin Powers franchise back to the big screen. Along with resurrecting Powers characters for a Verizon commercial, he recently said another movie is happening. Coincidentally, the Belcourt will have a Staff Picks screening of Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, still one of the funniest surprises to come out of the ’90s. People forget how much of an unexpected sleeper hit this 1997 spoof of James Bond movies (and other kitschy secret-agent flicks) was, with Myers playing both the titular superspy and Dr. Evil, his Lorne Michaels-sounding archnemesis, as they take their rivalry from the swinging ’60s to the grungy ’90s. It amassed enough of a cult rep on video for New Line Cinema to turn it into summer blockbuster IP, with Myers eventually dropping two sequels that were more like nonsensical, dick-joke-filled cash grabs. You’re better off catching the still-inventive, still-hilarious original at the Belcourt, with an introduction from staffer Erin Thompson.
