The Porch, Nashville’s leading literary nonprofit, always pulls out all the stops for its annual Rhythm & Rhapsody fundraiser, an event that traditionally fuses musical talent and literary voices — and this year they’ve outdone themselves. For years, Susannah Felts, one of The Porch’s founders, wanted to reach out to music legend Rosanne Cash to participate. She was hesitant, thinking The Porch perhaps wasn’t (yet) in Cash’s league. Felts admires how Cash “speaks her mind eloquently in public forums — full stop.” And, well, has that ever been more important than it is at this point in time? So Felts asked, and Cash said yes. The two brainstormed about conversation partners, and Cash suggested musician Neko Case. “I almost dropped the phone,” Felts tells the Scene. “I’ve been a huge fan of Neko since graduate school, when I lived in Chicago and was starting to get into alt-country.” If you have a lineup like Cash and Case, you need a powerhouse moderator. Enter music journalist Ann Powers. Obviously, you need to buy tickets online ASAP to hear these women talk about words and the world from the serene surroundings of Old School Farm. Proceeds support the ongoing work of The Porch.
