As Nashville legend has it, a local musician went into labor during a particularly sweltering June screening of Moonrise Kingdom’s initial 2012 run at the Belcourt. How perfect for this sun-drenched, life-affirming movie, which takes at its heart both the baffling anxieties of parenthood and how deeply serious and fantastical childhood feels. There’s so much to love about Moonrise Kingdom: Frances McDormand and Bill Murray play off of each other perfectly as a set of problem-ridden psychoanalyst parents, while Tilda Swinton provides a stern straight man in the form of Social Services. And then, of course, there’s the young lovers: Jared Gilman is pensive and sweet as Sam Shakusky, and Kara Hayward’s Suzy Bishop is responsible for getting a whole generation of girls into Peter Pan collars, record players and blue eyeshadow. Wes Anderson’s beloved coming-of-age story and modern twee classic returns to the theater as part of the Belcourt’s Milestones of the Last Quarter Century series, where it’ll hold court with screenings May 16 and 19.
