Critic's Pick — Nashville Ballet: Live in Studio A

There’s something so exhilarating about Nashville Ballet’s acclaimed Live in Studio A series. Presented at the intimate Martin Center for Nashville Ballet, this unique program really changes the way an audience connects with the art form, drawing us right into the movement, emotion and physical energy of the dancers. This weekend’s performance promises a particularly engaging blend of classical and contemporary works. George Balanchine’s marvelous Allegro Brillante anchors the program, balancing classical precision and technique with unbridled joy. Audiences will also get a first look at The Picture of Dorian Gray, an intriguing new work from Nashville Ballet rehearsal director Travis Bradley, inspired by Oscar Wilde’s timeless novel. (Billed as “a preview of what’s to come,” this marks an important step in the development of a piece that Nashville Ballet hopes to expand into a full-length production in the future.) The evening also features new works choreographed by Nashville Ballet company artists Maia Montgomery, Garritt McCabe and Anneliese Guerin — offering an important platform for emerging voices and perspectives from within the organization. It’s an ambitious lineup, and a perfect way for Nashville Ballet to open its 41st season.
