Friday-web

The Belcourt will celebrate 420 Day with a Music City Mondays screening (in glorious 35 mm!) of Friday, the 1995 stoner classic that proved that it isn’t all drive-bys in the ’hood. Some funny shit happens, too. (The movie even beat the Wayans brothers’ spoof/mouthful Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood by nearly a year.) Star/co-writer Ice Cube began his pivot from scary-ass rapper/actor to comedy figure with this flick, as he and then-rising comic Chris Tucker play South Central buddies just sitting on the porch, literally smoking the day away as they interact with the crazy characters in their neighborhood. While Cube would go on to drop two buckwild sequels (with comedian Mike Epps replacing Tucker as Cube’s damn-fool cousin), Friday is still the outrageous OG. And am I the only one who thinks this lowbrow laughfest is basically Waiting for Godot in the Hood? Hit the pen before the screening and see if you get the same vibe.

3:30 & 8 p.m. April 20 at the Belcourt

2102 Belcourt Ave.
