Parasite-web

Several of my most memorable filmgoing experiences have taken place at the Belcourt — a midnight screening of my favorite movie Scream, a buzzing theater for opening night of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood on 35 mm, taking off work to watch Heat on a summer afternoon for my birthday. One trip to the local arthouse I’ll never forget is when I saw Parasite in the fall of 2019, before the Oscar wins and director Bong Joon Ho’s invigorating speech on overcoming the “1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles.” Going in, I knew almost nothing about this twisty social thriller other than it had rave reviews. When each new layer of the story revealed itself — literally and metaphorically — I found myself leaning closer and closer to the screen. By the time the camera went barreling down into the basement for the third-act double reveal, I thought I was going to levitate out of my seat. I’ll never forget those two-plus hours. Here’s your chance to re-create that experience; don’t pass it up. And make sure to check your basement for any unwanted guests. The Best Picture winner is showing as part of the Belcourt’s Milestones of the Last Quarter Century series. For showtimes, visit belcourt.org.
