The Belcourt to Open Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 35 Millimeter

Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is slated for a July 26 release nationwide, and anticipation has been mounting for the auteur's ninth (and allegedly penultimate) film since ... well, since around the time he released his eighth one.

That film, The Hateful Eight, saw a limited-run special release in 70 millimeter that included a stop at the Carmike Thoroughbred 20 in Cool Springs — which is now the AMC Dine-In Thoroughbred 20 — on Christmas Day 2015. As it happens, Hateful co-star Walton Goggins showed up at the Thoroughbred for a screening, and even sat down with late, great Scene editor Jim Ridley for a chat, which produced Jim's very last cover story for us.

In keeping with Tarantino's affinity for special-engagement releases, some rad news comes our way this morning from the Belcourt: The local arthouse has been chosen as one of "a select group of theaters" to show Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 35 millimeter. There will be preview screenings on Thursday, July 25, and tickets for those are already on sale for Belcourt members, as are tickets for the film's first entire week (July 26-Aug. 1). Those will go on sale for non-members tomorrow, July 11, at 8 a.m. According to the Belcourt, "additional showtimes beyond Aug. 1 will be posted and on sale July 29." See all of the first week's showtimes — of which I count 31 in total — right here. According to the fine folks at the Belcourt, "The nearest other 35mm engagement is at least two states away."

As noted elsewhere, Hollywood was filmed with 35-millimeter film and post-converted to 70 millimeter (much like Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2017 masterwork Phantom Thread). The star-studded Once Upon a Time in Hollywood takes place in 1969 and follows the escapades of a washed-up film and television star (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double (Brad Pitt), whose paths cross with Sharon Tate (played by Margot Robbie) and the Manson Family (with Damon Herriman as Charles Manson and Dakota Fanning as Squeaky Fromme). The cast also includes Al Pacino, Bruce Dern, Zoë Bell and Kurt Russell.

Quentin Tarantino’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD visits 1969 Los Angeles, where everything is changing, as TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) make their way around an industry they hardly recognize anymore. The ninth film from the writer-director features a large ensemble cast and multiple storylines in a tribute to the final moments of Hollywood’s golden age.
