Penelope road

Following Penelope Road still feels like being in on a secret — the way breakout artists cultivate inner-circle fandom, just before they break out. This smooth young quintet out of Atlanta shows off rotating vocalists in jazzy standouts “Like You Love Me” and “Chance Encounter,” singing about Georgia nights and fleeting meet-cutes with all the marvel you’d expect from a band of childhood friends. Its members now in their early 20s, the group is signed to Warner Records and set to follow its two EPs with a debut album. Talent, chops, original sound and bright future — they have it all, and droves of fans are soon to follow. Their current gig on tour opening for established blues-rock singer-songwriter and top-flight guitarist Marcus King should help with that. Penelope Road shares both the bill and plenty of soulful Southern DNA with King, who will headline Municipal Auditorium on May 27. King will put on a strong show, but show up early for the openers — while they’re still openers.

8 p.m. at Municipal Auditorium
