It’s shaping up to be a monstrous weekend at the Belcourt. Midnight Movies are in full swing, and this weekend is a one-two punch of monster movie all-timers. On Friday night, the Belcourt is bringing the 1989 cult monster masterpiece Godzilla vs. Biollante to the screen. Slowly becoming one of the most iconic entries in the long-running Godzilla franchise, Godzilla vs. Biollante takes the idea of biological warfare to imaginative new levels, and it remains unlike anything else we’ve seen from this bombastic world of kaiju. Following that, on Saturday night, we’ve got Matt Reeves’ found-footage epic Cloverfield, which completely changed the game upon its theatrical launch back in 2008. With a cast full of future breakouts and the impeccable artistic vision of Reeves buying all the way into the found-footage aesthetic, Cloverfield is a disaster thriller that leaves you breathless from start to finish.
