Gremlins

The week between Christmas and New Year’s is a no-man’s-land. Some people are traveling, some people are working, some are just filling up on leftover candy and Chinese food — and almost everyone is looking for something to do. That makes it the perfect time to revisit Gremlins, the 1984 horror-comedy cult classic that revels in tearing down everything we hold dear during the holiday season with pure, unadulterated chaos. Family? Gift-giving? Beloved pet dogs? Gremlins gleefully and viciously comes for all of these, with a sidebar monologue from Phoebe Cates that will traumatize any children watching and once and for all convince them that Santa isn’t real. Fresh off a fittingly unhinged Jack in the Box partnership, Gizmo and his friends return to the big screen for daytime showings at various Nashville-area Regal Cinemas on Friday. Follow it up, if you like, with a home screening of the even-more-batshit Gremlins 2— and don’t feed them after midnight.
