Critic's Pick: 'Donnie Darko' 25th Anniversary Release

Few films capture the sheer unreality of teenage angst like Donnie Darko. For all its time-bending physics and complicated mythology that references both an urban legend from writer-director Richard Kelly’s home state of Virginia and his longtime fascination with Watership Down, the question the film ultimately asks is simple: What if the world actually was out to get you? Donnie’s road to a series of 25th anniversary screenings has been long, with an online afterlife coming after it bombed in theaters. There’s been a hit-or-miss 2004 director’s cut, and a questionable 2009 sequel, S. Darko, along the way. But as the weather starts to cool and Kelly prepares to release a sequel novel called The Philosophy of Time Travel, it’s the perfect time to revisit this Halloween cult classic.
