For those who follow the local theater scene, Cathy Street is no doubt a familiar name. A seasoned director, performer and educator, she first established Street Theatre Company back in 2005. Although she has since relocated to North Carolina, her impact is still felt throughout our community. (Her namesake theater company is also still going strong, having recently closed its 20th season with an excellent production of The View UpStairs.) Street is currently back in Nashville working on a thought-provoking new musical called The Tide, and you can check out a staged reading of the piece this weekend at The Darkhorse Theater. Featuring songs by musical duo The War and Treaty (with book by Street), The Tide follows a young man named Marcus, who returns from fighting a war overseas only to discover that “his own country has become nearly unrecognizable” due to pervasive fear, harsh restrictions and government suppression. Street has assembled a terrific cast, including Broadway’s Chris Lee (a Street Theatre alum known for his work in Hell’s Kitchen, the Chicago production of Hamilton and television’s The Chi and Legacies), along with Raven Buntyn, Isiah Rankin, Dee Hammonds, James Rudolph II, Savannah Stein and more. The reading is free, but you’ll need to reserve tickets at streettheatrecompany.org/the-tide.
July 9-11 at The Darkhorse Theater
