The Tennessee legislature is often criticized in Nashville and beyond for passing legislation that hinders rather than helps Tennesseans. But at least one bill became law during the 2024 Tennessee General Assembly that was unanimously agreed upon by bipartisan lawmakers and constituents: the Ensuring Likeness Voice and Image Security (ELVIS) Act. Gov. Bill Lee swiftly signed the bill into law after it was passed, making Tennessee the first state in the nation to protect individuals’ rights from misuse of artificial intelligence. The passage of a safeguard for musicians drew praise from several music industry groups, including the Recording Industry Association of America and the Nashville Musicians Association.
