Nashville has an array of great record stores, but we haven’t had one that embraces hip-hop in the same way as New Life Record Shop since it closed a few years back. Enter stellar rapper R.A.P. Ferreira, who settled in Nashville in 2019 and brought with him the idea for a hip-hop-centric community center focused on a record store. Based on a spot Ferreira ran when he lived in Biddeford, Maine, the new Madison iteration of Soulfolks Records and Tapes offers hard-to-find records with an emphasis on indie artists — and it’s hosted much-needed community-building shows like July’s Beat Invitational.
