Woodbine's Zoey the Goat Dies After Illness

Sometimes it's the little things in life that give us the most joy: a good meal at your favorite restaurant, holding hands with a person you love or seeing a goat get walked down the sidewalk while wearing a bonnet.

Sadly, one of those joys has been taken from us a little too early: Zoey, the goat often seen walking with her owner in the Woodbine neighborhood, passed away this morning.

Zoey's owners originally posted in the 16th District Nashville Facebook group that Zoey wasn't doing well, but as of last night, her vet said she was doing better and had a 1-in-3 chance of making it. But this morning, things took a turn for the worse:

"Our sweet Zoey has passed, she fought as long as she could," one of her owner's posted today. "After another round of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds this morning she started having seizures due to the stress and her poor body just couldn't bounce back. We want to thank everyone for the prayers and love that you have given Zoey, she has been a joy to our family and we will miss her dearly."

This past year, the Nashville Scene gave Zoey a Best of Nashville award. From that write-up:

Often decked out in a baseball cap or colorful sweater, Zoey and owner Mark Bigsbee can be found most mornings strolling down any number of Woodbine’s residential streets. Neighbors consistently rally behind their unofficial mascot, most notably with protests following removal threats from Metro Animal Care and Control in 2014. But in a rare display of the democratic process, the city conceded by allowing Zoey to remain in Woodbine and awarding her Nashville’s first-ever — and foreseeably only — therapy goat permit, making her Goat No. 001. Woodbine is quickly becoming a hotspot for residential and commercial development, but so long as residents like Zoey stick around, it will remain the lovable oddball cousin on the Nashville-district family tree.
