Diana Alarcon, director of the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure, has resigned after an approximately four-year stint.

The mayor’s office announced the move Monday, with a press release not noting the reason for Alarcon’s resignation or her future plans. Mayor Freddie O’Connell has appointed NDOT deputy director Phillip Jones as acting director of the department.

“On Friday, I accepted NDOT Director Diana Alarcon’s resignation,” O’Connell says in the release. “I would like to express my gratitude for the time, energy, and dedication she brought to the role over the last four years. I appreciate her partnership and faithful service to the city we both love, and we wish her the best.”

Former Nashville Mayor John Cooper named Alarcon to lead the then-new department in 2021. She arrived in Nashville after three years working as the transportation department director in Tucson, Ariz. Alarcon also launched Fort Lauderdale, Fla.’s department of transportation.

O’Connell says Jones, who previously worked as NDOT deputy director, has given more than 30 years of service to the department.

“He has overseen recent critical operational improvements like adding to our snowplow routes, patching more than 70,000 potholes, and assisting in implementation of critical elements of our Choose How You Move plan," the mayor says.

"Phillip is an accomplished and dedicated professional who loves Nashville, and I am confident that he will successfully guide the department during this time of transition.”
