Congressman Jim Cooper went on Bob Mueller's Sunday show to try to explain his vote against President Obama's economic stimulus package. Here's some of what Cooper said:
"It was very tough. I love Barack Obama. I think he's going to be a great president. But I'm afraid the old bulls in Congress, the old-fashioned leadership haven't gotten the message of change yet and that's why they loaded up all kinds of congressional pork onto the bill. .. It will have big determination of how popular Barack is, whether these programs actually work. I'm worried there's so much stuff loaded onto it that it's not going to work as well as expected. ... We do need a stimulus for the economy. It just needs to be a good stimulus. ... Everybody who voted for it was holding their nose. ... If history's any guide, the Senate's only going to make it worse. They've already added $70 billion of non-emergency spending that's not paid for. ....Congressmen love pork and that's a shame because that money's got to be repaid one day."
