This month marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a series of events in which New York City’s LGBTQ community fought back against systemic, systematic and targeted persecution at the hands of the police force and others. Pride Month, which is now celebrated all over the world, was born out of the Stonewall demonstrations. While Pride is now a joyful celebration of diversity and inclusion, it’s also an important time to remember those events, and to keep in mind the sacrifices that many members of the LGBTQ community have made and continue to make.
In this week’s issue, we listen to voices from Nashville’s LGBTQ community, take a look at Nashville Pride’s Community Visioning Project, remember to love ourselves in the face of intolerance, hear from someone who rejects the commercialization of Pride, learn about a forthcoming documentary, examine Nashville Pride’s relationship with police, meet this year’s Mr. and Mrs. Nashville Pride, and offer a roundup of this weekend’s Nashville Pride Fest events.
