Fans of Sturgill Simpson have long thought of him as a country phenom, but have generally seemed willing to follow him wherever his inspiration leads, with good results. Regardless of how much of a departure it was from 2013's High Top Mountain and 2014's Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, Simpson's Grammy-winning 2016 LP A Sailor's Guide to Earth kicked ass, as did his 2018 Bonnaroo performance (the only headlining show he played in the general vicinity of Music City after the release of Sailor's Guide). Simpson's most recent release — the honky-tonk ballad "The Dead Don't Die," the titular tune to Jim Jarmusch's maybe-too-meta-for-its-own-good zombie flick — has deep roots in the Bakersfield sound.
But Simpson's next project is set to be something completely different. Above, check out the action-packed trailer for Sound & Fury. As Simpson explained in a Saturday night session at San Diego Comic Con, the title refers to both his next album and an anime film he has produced and written the story for. The sound is self-described as a particularly gnarly flavor of rock, and each song will have an accompanying animated segment in the film — think Heavy Metal or Interstella 5555.
“We went in without any preconceived notions and came out with a really sleazy, steamy rock ’n' roll record," said Simpson, as reported by Variety. "It’s definitely my most psychedelic. And also my heaviest. I had this idea that it’d be really cool to animate some of these songs, and we ended up with a futuristic, dystopian, post-apocalyptic samurai film.”
There's an outstanding array of animation talent associated with the project, including writer-director Jumpei Mizusaki, who founded animation studio Kamikaze Douga (see Batman Ninja). Another marquee director is Koji Morimoto, whose credits include work on Akira, Kiki's Delivery Service and The Animatrix. Character design is by Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai). Sound & Fury is set to stream on Netflix on a date TBA, expected to be sometime in the fall.
