If you’ve seen the absolutely rolling-on-the-floor-funny vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows (or its television offshoot), you’ll know that it takes a good bit of work to keep eternal life from becoming a drag. Socializing isn’t exactly easy when you’ve got to spend much, if not all, of your life in the dark. That’s something that (mythical) vampires have in common with (real) touring musicians like Nashville country-psych-rock aces Teddy and the Rough Riders.
The group — guitarist-singer Jack Quiggins, bassman and singer Ryan Jennings, drummer Nick Swafford and pedal steel master Luke Schneider — has released a preview of the forthcoming album The Congress of Teddy and the Rough Riders in the form of the song “Vampire.” It’s a high-octane ripper with multiple ferocious guitar and steel solos, and it keeps coming back to having a hard time interacting: “I want to know how to be,” goes the chorus.
In the lo-fi music video for the song, Quiggins, Jennings and Swafford appear as a trio of hell-raisin’ vampires. They drain the life from a handle of Dickel whiskey while they play a show, wreak a little havoc in a studio and other nocturnal antics. Nick Jiosa filmed the clip, and engineer-producer Jake Davis edited it with an assist from the band.
Check it out above, and make plans to catch the group during AmericanaFest. They’re set to play Saturday, Sept. 14, during Runner of the Woods’ party (complete with free poutine!) called It’s All Gravy at Drifter’s in Five Points. Kristina Murray and Leo Rondeau will also play; the party runs 3-6 p.m., and Teddy & Co. shut it down with a set at 5:30. The tentative release date for Congress is Sept. 18. It’ll be available on CD first, per an email to the Cream from Jennings, with a vinyl release to follow. Also on Sept. 18, the Rough Riders kick off a monthlong tour running from Austin, Texas, all the way to the Pacific Northwest — keep an eye on their Facebook and Bandcamp profiles for updates.
