Ben Graves album art Settle Down

Vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Ben Graves’ Settle Down, released in October, brings the balance of precision and spontaneity as well as the instrumental flair that characterizes a jazz date to what is predominantly (though not entirely) a pop record. The degree of musical integrity and ability displayed not only by Graves but also fellow contributors Matt Rollins (keyboards), Viktor Krauss (bass) and Jano Rix (drums) is a massive bonus to the release. While there's a relaxed, easy feel in Graves' vocals — particularly his interpretative treatments of classics "My Ideal" and "God Bless the Child" — there's also ample substantive ensemble and interactive firepower on each number.

There are six originals on the eight-tune project, and each reveals an element of the many idioms being explored and incorporated in Graves' playing and singing. There's a distinct folk-pop edge to "Sleeping With My Guitar" and "Ballerina," while "The City Caught Me in Her Arms" tilts more in a jazz direction. Power-pop flavored opener “Play Me a Tune” and the title track reveal his facility for crisp, impressive playing and solid vocal delivery and phrasing.

Of course "God Bless the Child" always has a bluesy sensibility, and Graves acquits himself well with a version that retains the song's lyrical weight, yet nicely spotlights his individualistic voice and approach. Settle Down doesn't neatly fit any category, but its multi-faceted sound and strong caliber make it shine regardless.
