Cream Premiere: See Grant-Lee Phillips Get Caught in 'Tennessee Rain'

Way back at the end of 2014, well-traveled rock troubadour Grant-Lee Phillips had a conversation with Sean Maloney that touched on the strange places a passion for music can lead you. He also mentioned wrapping up his first album since moving to Nashville in 2013, tracked at Dan Auerbach's Easy Eye Studio with Colin Dupuis (whose work you've heard recently on JEFF the Brotherhood's new LP Zone).

That Phillips album is The Narrows, which hit the racks on March 18 of this year (buy a copy here or at your local record shop). Today, we're very pleased to premiere a video for its opening track, "Tennessee Rain." As Phillips' narrative about picking up the pieces rolls on, we see him dodging the weather down on Broadway, rocking out in a field and cruising around in a handsome '70s-vintage Ford pickup. Simple but effective, it just lets the song "resonate on a fundamentally human level," to borrow Maloney's phrase.

Check it out above, and look for Phillips during AmericanaFest, which comes to town Sept. 20-25.
