Cream Premiere: Guthrie Brown Gets Tempted in 'My Sweet Angel' [Fresh Vid]

The time has come once again to dress yourself, your family and your dog in matching tomato-themed costumes and head over to East Nashville for the Tomato Art Festival. There’s a kickoff concert tonight and family-friendly festivities all day Saturday, along with lots more music. At the top of the bill for Saturday is country-leaning, pop-schooled singer-songwriter Guthrie Brown, who’s preparing to release a new Jacquire King-produced EP called Keeping On, due Aug. 31. Brown's new single “My Sweet Angel” is out today, and the Cream is very pleased to premiere the music video above.

The piece directed by Jacqueline Justice takes place during an out-of-body experience heavy with religious symbolism. At the top of the video, Brown gets shocked by an old rotary phone placed near his bathtub and wakes up dazed in a forest clearing. Friends clad in white gather around him and try to hold him back from the constant temptation to answer the ringing phone. Whoever’s on the other end of the line seems to pose some danger: “Our friend the devil / She’s calling me up / Saying ‘Boy, you just forget about her / That ship, it has sunk,’ ” Brown sings.

“The message of the video is that feeling when you desperately want something or someone back in your life, even though you know in your heart that it's not good for you,” he says in an email. “Your close friends might reinforce by telling you it's a bad idea, but you still have to learn your lesson on your own terms.”

Brown's performance on Saturday is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the 37206 Stage, located in Five Points near Beyond the Edge and Drifters BBQ — he caps a full day of performances on multiple stages, and you can see the whole schedule at the Tomato Art Fest website.
