I Was a Young Girl (Lyrics)

When I was a young girl

I saw Dad pin against the wall

My sister, he had her by the hair

I never said a word

My mother left when I was 8

Came downstairs and said goodbye

My brother said he didn’t care

But he was dead by 25

If I have to live with it

I don’t want to believe it

I don’t want to relive it

If I have to live with it

I don’t want to believe it

I don’t want to relive it

If I have to live with it

I don’t want to believe it

I don’t want to relive it

I NEVER WANNA SUCCUMB

I never wanna feel

I never wanna feel it

I never wanna forgive

I NEVER WANNA SUCCUMB

If I have to

I never wanna believe

I never wanna relive

I NEVER WANNA SUCCUMB

I never wanna feel

I never wanna feel it

I never wanna forget

I NEVER WANNA SUCCUMB

REWIRE

REWIRE

REWIRE ME.

Some of the most uncomfortable feelings come from trying to reckon with violence perpetrated by people you're close to. How do you dissociate yourself from something that sickens you, but to which you're bound by circumstances beyond your control?

That conflict is at the core of “I Was a Young Girl,” the lead track from Black Bra, the forthcoming self-titled album from Beth Cameron's latest project. You'll know Cameron (and if you don't, you'll want to) as the songwriter, singer and guitarist of Forget Cassettes, one of the finest rock outfits to call Middle Tennessee home in the past two decades. If you know FC's most recent release, 2013's EP series/double-LP set O Cursa, you're going to dig the rich, dark and driving sound of the new project, which features Jesse Case on synths, Miles Price on bass and Tyler Coppage on drums.

Today, we're very pleased to premiere a lyric video for the song, made by Cameron and Price. As the camera takes us through a series of evocative, mostly uninhabited scenes — watching clouds slowly change shape, following a road in the eerie glow that lingers after sunset, driving through a peaceful cemetery — the aggressive groove surges and bends. Cameron narrates the struggle to focus and navigate a noxious, long-lasting cloud of anger and trauma, billowing out of incidents of domestic violence witnessed in childhood: “If I have to live with it / I don't want to believe it / I don't want to relive it.”
