For the third installment of Nashville Cream's "Live in the Morgue" series, we invited local country crooner Sturgill Simpson to play a couple of tunes in the Scene archives (aka "the morgue"). Tomorrow, May 13, Simpson will release his sophomore LP, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, via his own High Top Mountain Records (buy it here). In her story story on Metamodern Sounds, contributor Jewly Hight refers to the heady lead-off track, "Turtles All the Way Down," as "a genial traveling tune that explores the mysteries of human consciousness."
Above (or via the Scene's YouTube channel) you'll see Simpson providing a solo rendition of "Turtles." "It's this old myth that the Earth is like a giant flat disc that sits on the back of this giant cosmic turtle that carries it through space," Simpson tells the Cream in regard to the myth of the "cosmic turtle." "Which is another way of saying that no matter what you believe, they're all just theories, and nobody really knows shit. So you might as well just be nice and don't be a dick and love everybody, which is kinda what the record's about."
"Live in the Morgue" was produced and directed by Anthony Simpkins, with camera operation by John Taylor and Sam White and audio by Mike Colman. It was mastered by Sam Johnson. Stay tuned for more, and see past sessions here.
