Matt Mahaffey has a hell of a CV. He co-founded Murfreesboro's Spongebath Records, which was of course home to The Features, The Katies, Count Bass D, Fluid Ounces and Mahaffey's own indie-pop project, Self. He's worked and/or played with Beck, Liz Phair, Tenacious D, Phantom Planet and Beyoncé, for crying out loud. He's written film scores and the Expedia.com jingle (the latter with his late older brother, Mike), and even given
a pretty killer TED talk. This year he brought back Self with an EP by the name of Super Fake Nice (buy it
here) and
a full-band, two-song appearance on Kimmel.
Well, a few weeks back, we at the Cream were lucky enough to get a little sliver of the prolific Mr. Mahaffey's time. He popped into the Scene HQ's archives (aka "the morgue") where he performed a solo rendition of Super Fake Nice's "Looks and Money." The wee, be-winged, dancing accomplice you can see at Mahaffey's side is his daughter Ahna, and I can tell you from first-hand experience: She's a firecracker. Watch the performance above or via the Scene's YouTube channel. This installment of Live in the Morgue was shot and edited by Anthony Simpkins of GemsOnVHS, with audio by Mike Colman and additional camera work by Stephen Trageser. Self will play Marathon Music Works' Blocktoberfest on Oct. 18, and tickets for that are available here.
