Cream Premiere: Aaron Lee Tasjan Talks Rooming with Lydia Lunch, Going Solo in 'Git Gone' [Fresh Track]

Ohio-by-way-of-Brooklyn transplant Aaron Lee Tasjan has led a busy life that's included dropping out of the Berklee College of Music to join a band that snagged a major-label deal, touring as lead guitarist with the reincarnated New York Dolls and playing the same role in Drivin' N Cryin'.

He's got a lifetime of experience coming into his debut full-length In the Blazes, which is out Oct. 6 (pre-order on iTunes). His previous EPs, Crooked River Burning and Telling Stories to the Wall, showcased his skill at finding the perfect phrase to describe frustration, longing, anxiety or any other emotional state you could care to name but not live with, and marrying those sentiments with some virtuosic fingerstyle picking. In the Blazes builds on that core with a rocking electric band, recorded live in the studio. That includes Tasjan's lead vocals; the only overdubs on the entire album are piano and background vocals.

Ahead of the release, we're very pleased to premiere "Git Gone," a swift and swampy tune from Blazes about Tasjan making up his mind to strike out on his own. He tells the Scene that "Get Gone" dates from the time he and No Wave icon Lydia Lunch were roommates, living in DNC frontman Kevn Kinney's Brooklyn apartment.

"We spent a lot of time in the kitchen doing lines and sharing lines we were working on," Tasjan recalls. "Lydia is the hardest working artist I've ever seen. But her hustle is only a small part of her artistry. Her main thing is truth. It's inspiring and intimidating. Such is how I came to write 'Git Gone' — a career goal clearly mapped out. I'll get stoned every day and play guitar. How's that for a game plan? That was one of the biggest lessons I learned living with Lydia Lunch: It's not enough to simply not give a fuck. You have to not give a fuck about the right things." Check it out below.
