I don't know if y'all are getting tired of reading about the annual "Hot Chicken and Jorts" parties that are held to benefit the Oasis Center of Nashville, but I'll never grow weary of seeing Jubilee Beer president Mark Dunkerly dress up as Randy, his redneck alter ego, to enourage folks to let their mullets down and have a little mindless fun eating fiery fowl while wearing diminutive denim. (The addition of that old Opryland cap this year is genius.)
This year's Murfreesboro edition of the festival (called Hot Chicken and Jorts South) is set for this Saturday, Aug. 22, at Mayday Brewery, 521 Old Salem Road in the 'Boro. A new twist this year is that Hattie B's will be providing the chicken from their new mobile operation, and if you haven't had one of their fried thigh sandwiches yet, I suggest you close up your laptop and get to it! And wash your hands before you get back online or you'll have greasy keyboard keys forever. (I know of which I speak, unfortunately.)
Mayday owner Ozzy Nelson describes the event as “a redneck costume party where we drink beer, eat hot chicken, and listen to rock 'n' roll music,” so really, what's not to like? Other details from the official invitation include:
Participants are invited to play recreational corn-hole or giant Jenga in between bouts of hot chicken and cold Mayday and Jubilee brews. Those with a more competitive spirit can try their hands at a bracket-style Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament. The winning trophy consists of a Mayday Jug of Fun customized with Hot Chicken & Jorts 2015 and filled with craft brew.Mayday will also host a very tongue-in-cheek contest to crown Trailer Park King and Queen during the event. The King and Queen will each take home a customized Jug of Fun.
The fun runs 1 to 9 p.m. at Mayday; live music starts at 5, with performances by Dagger Blue and Red Wine Hangover.
If you're not down for the drive to Murfreesboro, there will be another Hot Chicken and Jorts event at Nashville's Paradise Park Trailer Resort on Lower Broad on the following Saturday, Aug. 29. Randy would suggest, "Hell, why not do both?"
