Today's Takeout Pick: Sinema

Much of the restaurant industry has had to rapidly change its business model due to COVID-19, and we’re highlighting the Nashville places that are attempting to stay open. We will give you a critic’s pick for a restaurant and a dish, as well as a running list of restaurants still open that you can support. Today: Sinema

I miss restaurants. I miss booths and waiters and unfunny jokes about how I must've "hated" the meal because my plate was all but licked clean. I miss putting my debit card into the little plastic slot on the check holder, I miss having to wave a server down to ask for a pen to sign the check and I miss always having a full and cold glass of water at arm's length. I am very terrible at remembering to refill my ice water myself!

I miss it all. So much.

So last weekend my husband and I tried to replicate a nice evening out as best we could by upping our takeout game and grabbing a few shareable plates from Sinema.

The atmosphere for our takeout wasn't as nice as if we had chosen to dine-in — we don't have dramatic wallpaper, the only candle in the house is a Glade "Clean Linen" scent, and there aren't any old movies being projected on the wall — but the food was good enough to make us feel, at least for one night, like we were finally treating ourselves to something special. It was the nicest meal we've had in months.

We started with the Peach & Pecan salad, a summery celebration of local ingredients. The pungent hunks of Kenny's blue gouda — did you know blue gouda was a thing? I did not know blue gouda was a thing! — nicely complemented the peppery bite of fresh arugula and sweet slices of Peach Truck peaches. The red verjus vinaigrette dressing tasted a tad boozy, but it's worth noting that I am a non-drinker, so it probably wouldn't even register to most. It wasn't so overwhelming that I wouldn't order it again and, in fact, I used a corner bite of the margherita flatbread (with red and yellow heirloom tomatoes and a crispy crust I could eat forever) to soak up some of the excess. Delicious.

The civility of our dinner was tested when we got to the agnolotti, aka Sinema's "hand-formed ricotta-filled ravioli." My first bite of one small cheese-stuffed pillow was delicate and divine, and a great partner to the more meaty-texture of the accompanying roasted shiitake mushrooms. But on the second bite I got a peek at the creamy mound of sun-dried tomato beurre monté hidden underneath. From there, it was game over. With just one taste of that sauce, I no longer wanted to share and I couldn't remain civilized. I scooped up a finger full and shoved it in my mouth and ended the meal by literally licking the to-go container clean. It would've been embarrassing had I been anywhere but home. Perhaps it's best I stay out of restaurants just a little bit longer.

While some may have had existing relationships with delivery providers, most of this list are offering the service for the first time. Most offer curbside pickup, but check when you order. As this list is a moving target, please leave any changes, suggestions or omissions in the comments.
