Today's Takeout Pick: CaityPies Bakery & BBQ and Vui's Kitchen at Hunters Station

Much of the restaurant industry has had to rapidly change its business model due to COVID-19, and we’re highlighting the Nashville places that are attempting to stay open. We will give you a critic’s pick for a restaurant and a dish, as well as a running list of restaurants still open that you can support. Today: CaityPies Bakery & BBQ and Vui's Kitchen at Hunters Station.

CaityPies has grown quite a bit in the months since I first profiled owners Caity Guszkowski and Chris Gonzales back in September. Not only has the pair further expanded their menu to include Gonzales' Texas-style barbecue — think brisket, ribs, pulled pork and whole chickens by the pound, Green Chili Mac (that also sometimes makes its way into hand pies?!) and cheddar chive buttermilk biscuits — but their sweets menu has expanded a bit, too.

Don't worry: Pies are still the star — summer flavors include Caramel Corn Custard, Cereal Killer Ice Box, Coffee Chess and Black Sesame Sugar Cream — but CaityPies has also started offering cookies, brownies, Milwaukee-style cruller donuts and even cake. Yes, cake! Because you do not have to pick sides in the pie vs. cake fight. You can love both.

Of course, this menu expansion piqued my interest, so last week I built my own little dessert box to keep me company while watching the Preds game. (Sad face.)

The Peanut Butter Mud Pie (available as both a regular-size pie and a mini pie) is a must for anyone who's a fan of the peanut-butter-and-chocolate combo. The peanut butter filling is ooey, gooey and rich, somehow even more intense with peanut butter flavor than if they had just used straight Skippy. But as good as it was, it wasn't even my favorite treat in the box.

That honor goes to the Miso Espresso Brownie ($3). I'm a sucker for a really thick and fudgy brownie — so much so that I like brownie batter more than I like baked brownies usually — and CaityPies' brownie was a thing of dreams. The espresso gave the chocolate depth, and the red miso provided the perfect salty, savory tang. My husband ate the last bite; I'm still kind of mad that my husband ate the last bite.

The Birthday Cake Square ($4) was also great. The moist yellow cake was layered and topped with a creamy sour cream chocolate icing. It was simple but well done (and I stole the last bite of that one). The ButterMKE Cruller Donuts ($2 a pop) were a tad on the dry side, but that's a non-issue when enjoying it as a Saturday morning breakfast with coffee.

You can order CaityPies' desserts and barbecue online for pickup at Hunters Station on Fridays — this week their menu includes their FrankenPie, six pies in one! — and while you're in the neighborhood, remember that all of Hunters Stations' restaurants are currently open for business. Hugh-Baby's, Vui's Kitchen, The Grilled Cheeserie and Tacos Aurora are offering online ordering for pickup and curbside delivery via the Hunters Station website.

I highly recommend the noodle bowl at Vui's with grilled lemongrass tofu. Get the lettuce wraps, too. But don't forget to leave room for pie.

Below is a list of Nashville restaurants (with links) remaining open for takeout and delivery during the COVID-19 shutdown. While some may have had existing relationships with delivery providers, most of this list are offering the service for the first time. Most offer curbside pickup, but check when you order. As this list is a moving target, please leave any changes, suggestions or omissions in the comments.
