Today’s Takeout Pick: Nicoletto's Italian Kitchen (Again)

Much of the restaurant industry has had to rapidly change its business model due to COVID-19, and we’re highlighting the Nashville places that are attempting to stay open. We will give you a critic’s pick for a restaurant and a dish, as well as a running list of restaurants still open that you can support. Today's pick: Nicoletto's Italian Kitchen.

It was a dreary Sunday afternoon, and I was still swallowing a bit of bile from the Titans’ disappointing loss to the Steelers. Rather than wallowing in my blue funk, I sought out a salve. Immediately I knew what I needed — carbs! I also knew who was nearby that could deliver the solution via Uber Eats, and the answer was Nicolleto’s Italian Kitchen in Hillsboro Village. (Yes I filed a Takeout Pick on Nicoletto's, which also has an East Side location, back in April — but a lot has changed since then, and like I said, I needed carbs.)

A quick perusal of the online menu stopped at the first listing under the “favorites” section. Chicken parm was exactly what my household needed. When I say household, I mean that the single order of fresh spaghetti, house-made marinara and brined and fried chicken breasts under a blanket of mozzarella, parmesan and basil was plenty for two of us to split when accompanied by a large Italian salad. We could have subbed in a different pasta for the spaghetti, but we decided to go old-school with our order. The salad was also pretty notable, served with green leaf lettuce, salami, mortadella, roasted red peppers, shredded provolone and banana peppers. Pick from a list of house-made dressings to finish off this great bowl of greens.

Uber Eats and Nicolleto’s had a special deal offering $5 off for an order over $30, and I hadn’t quite reached the limit with my order, so I scanned the menu again. I was delighted to see that Nicolleto’s is also offering its specialty dried and fresh pastas for online purchase and delivery. Making pasta at home is one of my hobbies, but there are certain shapes that I could never achieve in my own kitchen. Chief among those is radiatori, a squat pasta shape with fins like a radiator that are a sauce’s best friends — they trap all that ragu-dness between the layers. I added a one-pound bag of radiatori for just $6.95, which with the $5 discount meant that it was almost free. I see some elevated mac-and-cheese in my immediate future!
