Much of the restaurant industry has had to change its business model in a couple of weeks due to COVID-19, and we’re trying to highlight the Nashville places that are attempting to stay open. Each day we will give you a critic’s pick for a restaurant and a dish, as well as a running list of restaurants still open that you can support. Today: Nectar Urban Cantina.
Here’s something I don’t find myself thinking very often: Those folks in Donelson really have it good! All kidding aside about Hip Donelson, the residents are fortunate to have access to what is one of the best carryout options in the county, thanks to Nectar Urban Cantina and its inventive family-pack deals. Chef Julio Hernandez and his team have been hard at work trying to maintain the sense of community that the convivial restaurant has established in their neighborhood and around town, so their family packs are the perfect way to gather the family and enjoy a little (well, huge) taste of Nectar.
There are some unexpected options on the list for a Latin-themed restaurant, including a corned-beef-and-cabbage package for four at the low price of just $35. Historically a popular food option during tough times, this particular dish is great served hot or cold and comes with house-corned beef served with cabbage, carrots and smashed red potatoes and a house salad. Other options for family meals include a $25 taco pack for four and a “Build Your Own Chicken Fajita Bar” for $35.
The item that really caught my eye, though, was Nectar’s Chicken Enchilada pack. For just $10 per person for a family of four, you can pick up a dozen delicious enchiladas made with ingredients sourced locally, packed in a tray for easy reheating and topped with red and green salsa and queso — plus extra toppings on the side for customization, including cheddar cheese, pico de gallo, pickled onion and jalapeños. The enchiladas come with side dishes of verde rice and black beans, chips with fire-roasted salsa, and a colorful house salad along with your choice of agave vinaigrette or poblano ranch dressing.
The Nectar folks have recently added an online mercado offering up kitchen staples, wine, margaritas and household items through their virtual market. So in addition to a dinner that will probably stretch into leftovers for lunch, you can order five pounds of ground beef, a flat of eggs, a 5-pound bag of bread flour (act fast!) and a six-pack of toilet paper. Why would you ever leave home again?
