Subculture's churrasco sandwich

In an Instagram post Friday afternoon, the owners of Subculture Urban Cuisine and Cafe announced that the Nolensville Pike restaurant will close at the end of the month. Over the course of nine years, the restaurant earned many accolades — including the Scene’s own Best of Nashville awards — for its churrasco sandwich and vegetarian hot chicken substitute.

The last week of operation lasts from Tuesday, May 27, to Saturday, May 31, according to the Instagram caption.

Chefs and brothers Pablo and Javier Bonacic kickstarted the restaurant and its original menu in 2016, and co-owned the restaurant along with other family members. The brothers were born in Chile, and Latin American influences — along with other creative twists — helped establish a menu that impressed food critics over the years. The Scene’s own Chris Chamberlain described it as a “mad-scientist” take on Southern cuisine, complete with a hot chicken ramen.

“This is not goodbye forever,” reads the Instagram post. “It's simply the closing of a beautiful chapter we are proud to have written with you. Thank you for being part of our journey, our family, and our story.”

Subculture’s Smyrna outpost will keep operating at the normal hours, per the Instagram post.
